A Fun Day for the Guys and Girls

Tuesday went really well. Classes consisted of the science class researching for their planet project, and the computer class for the 01’s were continuing on the robots, while the 02’s kept up on the yearbook. Following classes, activity time was Ultimate Frisbee. The nightly activity was Ladie’s Night/Guy’s Night. The ladies enjoyed a night with a cosmetic relay, ice cream, and a movie. However, the first two rules of Guy’s Night were you can’t talk about Guy’s Night. The students had a lot fun, and they are ready to go for Wednesday.

Not an Average Monday

Monday was a great day! In classes, no one had a case of the “Mondays.” Classes ran smoothly, with the students reading their books for Reading/Writing class, and the 02’s working hard on the yearbook, and the 01’s making Lego robots.

Following classes, speaker Craig Hillier spoke to us about “Breaking Through.” He had the kids laughing and intrigued with everything he had to tell them. All of it was based on getting ready for college and making sure that you start out right.
Following the speaker and supper, the students got to play Capture the Flag with a bit of a twist. Instead of tagging, they threw water balloons to get people out. Monday was a great day for the students.

Finishing the Second Module

On Wednesday, the students started with their regularly morning classes, and then the school part was done, and so it was time for fun. The students went back to the dorms to get freshened up for the speaker we brought in for the students. The speaker we brought in was Salesi Mounga. He talked about the hard things you have to struggle with in life, about drugs and alcohol, and he helped us discover our real personality. When the speech was over, it was time for the losing team to get pied in the face for the Olympics. (Including Tim).

On Thursday, the winning team gets rewarded with the switch-around. In each class the winning students get to choose the counselor that they want to switch with, and they were those counselors for the day. The counselors that are chosen have to be a student for that class. After classes the students had activity time, and they played Human Rock, Paper, Scissors. During the night, it was a study night, and errand run.

On Friday, the students toured Dacotah Bank for computer class to learn about how banks are run, and what they'll go through when they open their accounts. During math class, they got to "Put for Pop."

During the down weekend, the students held signs for Conlin’s furniture again. They also had some movie nights, went swimming, and hung out at Wylie Park.

We are now ready for the third module!!!!!!

Then the students went outside to play a game of Sharks and Minnows. Then following family time and supper, the students had a study night and an errand run.

They do this by answering a math problem correctly, and then shooting a ball into a bucket. The team with the most points gets a jar of pickles. In the afternoon the students started holding signs for Conlin's Furniture. This was the kick-off of the down weekend.

The weekend then led to a lot of fun for the down weekend. There was Wiffle Ball (with a few extra twists thrown in). There were movie nights. There was holding signs for Conlin’s Furniture. All this activities kept the students active, and they were never bored.

Weekend Full of Excitement

On Friday afternoon, the students were getting prepped and pumped for the camping trip they were about to embark upon. There was a race to see who could get the most tents up the fastest. Then a former Upward Bound counselor returned for an action packed game of Mafia. The students got to go run some errands and get some stuff that they needed for the trip.

The students and counselors set off for Roy Lake Campground at 8:30 a.m. Saturday June 5. When they arrived, they set up camp, had some lunch, and played Ultimate Frisbee and Bean Bags.

The afternoon was filled with history at the Fort Sisseton Historical Days. They saw different tents full of items and food. There were also different attractions; like learning how to crack a bull whip.

They went back to the campground for a night full of fun. As the grill was being fired up, Ultimate Frisbee and Bean Bags were played again. Then the brats and hot dogs were ready to be served. Following supper, the tug-o-war rope was tugged, and, as night fell, Mafia was played around the campfire. Lights out came next.

On Sunday, everyone woke up at 8:30 a.m. and took down camp. The vans left and came back to Northern around noon. The afternoon was full of relaxation and napping after a long weekend. That night they got to travel to Wylie for a night of Go-Karts and Mini Golfing. Sunday also welcomed the arrival of new students.

On Monday, the students were back in school for a great day of classes. Mr. Osman was back in class for computers, and the students started a paper for reading/writing class. Then in the evening the students and counselors went to watch Sherlock Holmes.
